Exploring in black & white
Shooting in black and white is a study of the bones of a scene. My focus is on geometry, and the juxtaposition of light and shadows. Whether I’m composing a product shot or a street scene, I’m always looking for those subtle details hidden in plain sight. By shooting straight out of camera, I’m forced to slow down and let the negative space breathe, letting the framing do the heavy lifting. No post-processing. Just form. #BayAreaPhotographer #ProductPhotography #SOOC #Straigh

The Teahouse build
A peek behind the curtain of the Japanese teahouse shoot that I produced for 3 Sticks Design in Woodside, CA. This was an elaborate, multi-stage process. I absolutely love traditional Japanese architecture, so it was a total indulgence to document, especially observing Jeff’s mastery while prepping the Mizugone (plaster), and the wabi-sabi roof and gable. Designed by Paul Discoe and Jeff Bearce Built by Jeff Bearce of 3 Sticks Design

Little details | Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is my favorite city on earth. It's electric, and steeped in history. The juxtaposition of ancient temples and modern cafes and futuristic office buildings is fascinating. It's a photographers paradise. Walk slowly, soak it in, and you will find stunning details in the liminal spaces.

Returning to Koyasan, two decades later
A surreal return to Rengejo-in Temple in Koyasan with my wife and kids, nearly 20 years later, to the place that made me fall in love with Japan. Walking the serene grounds, joining in early morning chanting, and evening meditations were transformative. Their multi-course, Buddhist vegetarian meals (Shōjin Ryōri) are delicious and beautiful. Easily one of my favorite places in the world. Thank you, Rengejōin. Natsukashii
